Upon graduating from UCLA Medical School in 1970, Dr. Edward O’Connor did two years of medical residency in the University of California Affiliated Hospitals (West L.A. VA Hospital, Harbor General Hospital, and UCLA Medical Center). Then came a year of traveling the world before starting a three year neurology residency, finishing as Chief Resident in Neurology at UCLA in 1977.
From 1977-1978, Dr. O’Connor worked as registrar at the National Hospital for Nervous Disease, Queen Square and Maida Vale, London. He learned the tradition of great British clinical neurology under Professor Ian McDonald and others.
After returning to Los Angeles, Dr. O’Connor spent eight years at White Memorial Medical Center serving as Chief, Section of Neurology and as Director of the Rehabilitation Unit. In 1986, he partnered in private practice with fellow UCLA neurologists in the Neurological Associates of West Los Angeles. Still in this practice after 25 years, Dr. O’Connor has served as Chief, Section of Neurology at Santa Monica Hospital and Secretary of the St. John’s Hospital Medical Staff, Santa Monica. He is a clinical associate professor of neurology at UCLA and USC, and a Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology.
Dr. O’Connor is recognized as a top neurologist in Los Angeles is listed as Super Doctor, and is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry & Neurology, the American Board of Electrodiagnostic Medicine and certified in MRI and CT’s by the American Society of Neuroimaging. He is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology (FAAN). More recently, Dr. O’Connor has become a trained NeuroStar Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) Therapy Provider and treats patients with depression using NeuroStar TMS Therapy. NeuroStar TMS Therapy is a safe and effective non-drug treatment for depression.
Dr. O’Connor enjoys practicing in the ever-expanding field of neurology and strongly believes in employing the art and science of clinical neurology to arrive at the correct diagnosis, and then working closely with the patient to outline a specific treatment plan. He knows that listening attentively to the patient is the best neurological education. His practice encompasses all general neurology and more recently, an emphasis on the diagnosis and compassionate treatment of pain.
Dr. O’Connor is married with three sons. He participates in the UCLA Master’s swimming program and remains involved in rugby as coach of a Los Angeles high school team. He has been elected to 3 rugby Halls of Fame: UCLA Rugby, Santa Monica Rugby Club (winning two more national championships), and the Albuquerque Rugby Club.
